During the time when the Carson area was settled, the Catholic people were served by missionary priests who would celebrate Mass in the homes of the Catholic faithful. Fr. Hake was the first priest known to serve in the territory. He served from 1914 until 1916. During the early history of St. Theresa, the church was a mission of St. John the Baptist in New Leipzig.
The first record of a Mass was in the home of Mr. & Mrs. P.P. Schlosser in 1917 when Fr. Heintz was active in the area. Thereafter, Masses were held periodically in the homes of various Catholics until 1926. In January of 1926, the Catholic community of Carson felt the need to have a church of their own. So, with money that was raised locally and with the help of the Catholic Extention Society, they bought a church building in Mott, ND, moved it to Carson, and named it in honor of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus. This church building is located to the east of the current building.
About 1946, the members of the mission felt the need for a new church and rectory and to accomodate a resident priest. They started to work towards that goal. On October 1, 1948, St.Theresa was established as a parish and Fr. Adolph Pribyl was sent as administator. In April 1949, the new church was started. In November, the first Mass was offered in the new St. Theresa Church. In December of the same year, Fr. Raymond Aydt came to St. Theresa as the first resident pastor.
In 1985, during the time Fr. Edwin Wehner served, St. Theresa parish became a member of a church cluster with St. Gertrude in Raleigh and St. Lawrence in Flasher. The rectory and parish offices for all three parishes are now located in Flasher, ND.
The seventy-two families of St. Theresa Catholic Church remember, with gratitude, all their pastors, and all former and present members of our parish community, for their hard work, strong faith, and good example.
